I follow a 5-part review system when I analyze games for kids, prioritizing some of the most important content and developmental aspects. I hope that these aspects help parents make informed decisions about which video games are appropriate and beneficial for their young children.
Each of the five parts are defined individually here, and each are given a rating from 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest and 1 being the lowest.
An overview of the entertainment value, replayability, and overall fun factor to determine whether your child will enjoy playing the game.
An assessment of the game's controls, user interface, and gameplay mechanics in relation to the ability level of young children.
What online features the game has and how it connects your child to the world outside of the game.
A brief, not-exhaustive summary of any content that may be unsafe for kids, specifically in regards to violence, drugs/alcohol, gambling, and sexual content.
An overview of how your children can learn while playing the game. Generally focused on developmental skills such as problem-solving, word recognition, etc.
